The Aspirations in Action Journal
I have been a teacher for 19 years, 17 of which have been in the special education field. Over the years, I have taught in residential treatment centers, on a special campus, and on regular middle and elementary school campuses. I have worked with students who have autism, emotional disabilities, learning disabilities, and other health impairments, and found that the stigma attached to having a disability really prevents progress.

Disney Citizen Kid
Fiona sharing her story of #autism, at local schools. Breaking down stereotypes & creating understanding. #citizenkid

A Citizen Kid is a lot of things. It’s any child that is willing to lend a helping hand and make someone’s day a bit brighter. It’s the little girl who asks her mom if she needs help at the end of a busy day, or the group of kids raising money for a non-profit through a lemonade stand.

Meet Fiona Hale. She’s 12, in the sixth grade, and has autism. But instead of perceiving it as a weakness or burden, Fiona uses her autism and artistic abilities to empower herself and others with the same disability.
